Friendship Group (Minus One)

So time has dimmed the features of your face
And your laugh lives in our memories alone
Classic virtues? We won’t bestow on you
But speak of the real you, that we have known.

All your faults and flaws are brought to the fore
When incidences we fondly retell,
A pause. Then smiles. ‘Do you remember when…?’
Snapshots of the past - and all of us well.

‘Call a spade a spade’ you were known to say
‘Warts and all; this life isn’t a show’
So together we recount as wine is drunk
And stories and familiarity flows.

Shared memories offer us comfort,
Others spark glee in their revelation,
But you’d be proud of us – we’ve done it:
Your real life remembered, in celebration.
