Once A Marine

The words read: "...in memory of all our comrades..."
As I stood beneath the soldiers bronze boots
And studied the green faces
Searching for a father's likeness in their stern gaze
I thought : I won't shed a tear for you, old bastard
But it wasn't rain that blurred the distant mountains
For the storm had broken
and long since released its grief upon the wind
